How Long Does It Take To See Results From Working Out At The Gym?
Many people are curious about the amount of time and effort needed to begin seeing gym results. The popularity of 28-day challenges, 6-week bootcamps, and 7-day detoxes is a testament to the average American’s desire for quick fixes and fast results - especially changes in the way they look and feel. Unfortunately, like many other things in life, the length of time needed to see results from working out varies substantially from person to person. However, in general, the slower approach to exercise, diet, and overall fitness changes tends to provide lasting results that are not only more sustainable but also healthier.
For example, people who lose a lot of weight quickly - let’s say ten pounds or more in a month or less - tend to have a higher chance of regaining the lost weight compared to someone who loses just 1-2 pounds per week.
For another example, consider the sport of powerlifting, where you try to lift the maximum amount of weight possible for one repetition in the squat, bench press, and deadlift, you could max out on all of those lifts every week for three months. At the end of those three months, your maximum lifts would be higher. But you would also be more susceptible to major injuries as a result of putting so much strain on your muscles, ligaments, and tendons every single week for three months. You might get stronger quickly, but you also may incur a severe soft tissue injury. The quick results are not healthy nor sustainable. A better approach would be to max out your lifts once a month while doing lower weights on the other three weeks, which would allow your body to get stronger - gradually - with minor risk of injury.
At Strength School gym in Martinsville, we advocate not just a long-term approach to health and fitness, but a lifelong approach. Gym results can be achieved very quickly - for example, a beginner can learn how to lift weights properly in a single session with a good personal trainer. You can see changes in strength levels from exercise in a month or less. After three months, muscle tone can change visibly, with better definition in the arms and shoulders for some people. And a complete body transformation can be done in 6-12 months for many people with a good diet and exercise program. However, the body always strives to take the easiest route, and it will return to being fat, happy, and lazy when given the chance. So even after someone achieves the gym results they want, those changes will disappear if they discontinue their program. Thus, good habits in the gym and at the dinner table must be reinforced throughout the entire lifespan, which is what we encourage here at Strength School gym in Martinsville.
Body Transformation for a Female over 60
I want to share a transformation from one of our clients at Strength School gym in Martinsville. Patty has been exercising at Strength School for about two years, shortly after she turned 60 years old. As you can see in her pictures below, she has completely transformed her body during that time - congratulations Patty!
Along with her three Strength School classes each week, Patty joins several friends for long walks 2-3 days a week and eats a balanced diet.
Here’s what Patty has to say about her time at Strength School:
“Two years ago, I joined Strength School. I'd recently turned 60, and I was really out of shape. My goal was to get stronger and healthier.
Initially, I was kind of intimidated at the prospect of lifting weights. I had this vision of a gym full of muscle-bound 20 somethings. What I found was a supportive group of men and women of all ages and fitness levels.
Shane offers balanced workouts in a small class setting. Emphasis is on doing the exercises correctly to avoid injury. By the end of the first year, I was strong and fit and had lost 30 pounds.
Recently I attended a retirement party full of old friends. One of them exclaimed "OMG! You look so good!" "It's like you are aging backwards!" What woman does not like to hear that.”
