Gym
By most estimates, over 50 million Americans pay for a gym membership of some sort: personal training, group fitness, yoga, circuit training, cycling, and many more. As more and more people join a gym every year, the gym industry continues to grow. There are roughly 35,000 gyms in the US, and like any area of business, there is a constant shifting of new fitness gyms opening and old fitness centers closing their doors. In almost every city in the country, large and small, there is at least one place where the community can go to exercise, and often times there are many different choices for the consumer to select from.
The most common type of fitness gym offers access to exercise and weight equipment - machines, cables, free weights, barbells, dumbbells, and cardio equipment - where members can come in any time they want during business hours, stay for however long they wish, and use any of the available exercise equipment. There are no coaches, trainers, or instructors - each person is on their own to decide how to workout, what exercises to use, and all the other details of their session. As long as they are not bothering the other gym members, hurting themselves, or damaging the gym or the gym equipment, they are free to workout however they want to. Basically, in the typical gym, the members are paying for access to the gym equipment. In these gyms, people often pay a monthly fee for access to the gym, sometimes as low as $9.99 a month up to $100 a month or more for larger, upscale fitness centers that include exercise equipment, locker rooms, a pool, and other amenities. Some of these gyms include 24-hour access, where people get a special card when they sign up that allows them to enter the facility at any time of the day, any day of the year, even on holidays.
In contrast to the average gym in America, where the members are essentially renting the equipment and space each month for their own usage, there are many specialty gyms and fitness studios nowadays. There are yoga studios, exclusively offering yoga classes for stretching, strength, muscle tone, and other goals. There are cycling gyms that offer all classes using stationary bikes, often times with an instructor leading each class and encouraging the members. There are also boxing-themed fitness centers, which offer different workouts using exercises, equipment, and concepts from the boxing world, such as speed bags, punching a heavy bag, and jump rope. The idea behind these specialty fitness studios is to offer a single, or maybe just a few, type of exercise class for those people who are very enthusiastic about that type of training. So rather than trying to offer everything to everyone, these gyms decide to invest heavily into one type of exercise. These niche gyms - some people call them ‘microgyms’ - have become incredibly popular and successful in the last ten years or so. Because these fitness studios are more specialized than the regular gym, they tend to charge higher prices for their memberships, often $49-$200 per month.
