Three Tips to Stay Hydrated in the Heat and Humidity

Hi everyone! Surprise, Alyx McKee here - I am the coach at our southside Indianapolis gym. Today I want to share some tips on staying hydrated.

It's summer and with the heat and humidity going up you need to make sure you stay hydrated. Here are my top 3 tips to stay hydrated this summer.

water and sea salt for hydration

First, The obvious, drink water first thing in the morning!  But there is a spin to this, water is not always enough. Your body needs electrolytes along with water to stay properly hydrated. To do this drink electrolyte infused water or do what I do and sprinkle a little salt in your water first thing in the morning. Try and stick to celtic salt, pink salt and sea salt, such as those in the picture. I promise the taste isn't that bad.

Second, Eat your water. This one is easy since fruits and veggies are fresh and in season right now. Try and eat foods that contain high water content, such as: watermelon (92%), strawberries (91%), Cantaloupe (90%), Peaches (89%), Oranges (88%), and Cucumbers (95%). There are more but these are my favorite in the summer.

Third, as busy as summers get you need to still pay attention to what our body is telling you. So the third tip is to be aware of when you are dehydrated.

The most common signs of dehydration are:

  • Constant thirst

  • Dry mouth

  • Dark yellow pee

  • Dry skin

  • Headaches

Make sure to pay attention to your body so you know if you need to hydrate. Whether you have any of these symptoms or not it is important to stay hydrated, so drink up!

P.S. Don't be tricked into high sugar drinks just because they say they are hydrating. Try and stick to water over those drinks. And after your workouts, try an ice-cold LIFEAID drinks, packed with vitamins, electrolytes, and absolutely no artificial sweeteners. We carry these at our gyms in Martinsville and Indianapolis, and you can also find them at many health food stores and some grocery stores.
